Make keychain with engraved intermediate and leather strap

You can make this keychain yourself with 5 mm sail rope as well as with braided leather strap

The keychain can be easily made with any ribbon with 5 mm diameter. In this step by step tutorial you will see what materials and tools you need for this.

Step 1
Here you can see the material and the tool that you need for this keychain.

The material:
The most important is the intermediate piece. It is specially designed for 5 mm diameter ribbons and is available with many different engraved designs. We use braided leather strap as the ribbon in this tutorial. Other than that, all you need is a key ring and glue.

The tools:
You don't need much for this tutorial! A sharp knife or scissors. We recommend a ceramic knife.

Step 2
First you need to cut the leather strap to the appropriate length. We use a ceramic knife for this. To avoid unsightly cutting marks, we use a board as a base.
Leather tape is a very compact tape. It takes a bit of force to cut, but then you can cut the ribbon cleanly and it won't fray. If you use other types of tape, such as sail rope, we recommend that you wrap the tape with tape before cutting.

Step 3
We cut the ribbon in a length of 24 cm. In principle, you can cut the ribbon in any length. For a normal keychain we recommend a length between 20 and 24 cm.

Now you just have to choose the right intermediate piece. You can choose between many different motifs, place names and sayings.

For this keychain we have chosen the classic"Home Port"!

Step 4
And now it starts. Put the intermediate piece on the leather strap. Position it approximately in the upper third of the band. This way the intermediate piece is already in the right position for the next step.

Step 5
The next step is to create the lower loop of the keychain. Bend the leather strap and insert it into the intermediate piece. Push the ribbon up to about half of the intermediate piece. The upper third of the ribbon still sticks out of the intermediate piece.

Step 6
No keychain without a key ring. You must not forget it!
In the next step you pull the key ring onto the upper end of the ribbon.

In our store you can find many different key rings. We recommend a key ring that matches the color of the intermediate piece. Key rings with a diameter of 20 to 30 mm fit best.

Step 7
Now you need to glue the key ring securely. For leather strap or canvas you can use different types of glue.

If you want to do it quickly:
In this case we recommend superglue. As the name suggests, this glue dries within a few moments. You can therefore use the keychain quickly.

If you have some time:
Then you can also use Hasulith jewelry glue. The glue is a bit more viscous and therefore a bit harder to dose. But the gluing result is also very good. Jewelry glue needs at least 12 - 24 hours until it is completely dry.

If you want to be on the safe side:
Two-component gl ue has the strongest adhesive power. You can use it to glue your keychain securely.

Step 8
Now stick the upper end of the ribbon into the glue in the intermediate piece. The keychain is now ready and only needs to dry a little.
Time that you can use to make a second keychain to give away!

Step 9
We have already mentioned that you can choose the length of the leather strap or sail rope for the keychain individually. For comparison, we have placed two keychains with different strap lengths next to each other.

The upper keychain has a strap length of 24 cm.
The lower keychain has a strap length of 20 cm.
So you can see that a few centimeters of strap length make a big difference.

Step 10
But not only the length of the ribbon changes the appearance of the keychain. The choice of the type of ribbon also has a big influence. Here you can see keychains with colored braided leather strap and sail rope.

The combination possibilities are huge. So have fun choosing and making your own personal keychain!
