Making keychain with leather paint and embossing stamps
In this DIY tutorial we will show you how to make a keychain very easily with leather paint and embossing stamps.
In this tutorial we will show you how to make a stylish keychain from a leather blank. The keychain is first painted and then still processed with embossing stamps. For this you need a leather keychain blank, leather preparer, leather paint, scotch tape, punches, hammer and a stamping pad.
Important for any leather project with leather color is a careful preparation of the leather. The leather must be degreased and cleaned with a special preparer. To do this, put some preparatory liquid on a soft cloth. Wipe the leather thoroughly with the cloth. Let the now damp leather dry thoroughly.
In the next step, tape off the part of the keychain that will not be dyed later. Work as accurately as possible and press the adhesive strip firmly onto the leather. The color should not run under the adhesive strip later!
Before you start painting the leather, you need to shake the paint well. It's best to put a plastic sheet or a thick layer of paper underneath so that you don't dirty your work table.
Now start painting the leather. Apply the paint as thinly as possible so that you get an even result.
Apply the paint on the entire free surface of the keychain. Do not forget to paint the edges as well. If the paint did not cover completely during the first coat, you can apply a second thin layer. However, one coat of paint is usually enough for light-colored leather.
Let the paint dry completely. Depending on the room temperature, this can take different amounts of time. However, the paint needs at least one hour to dry. When the paint is completely dry, you can carefully peel off the tape. If the tape has roughened the leather a bit, this is not a problem. This will disappear when you grease the leather again. In the simplest case, simply stroke the leather with your fingertip.
In the next step you can individualize the leather keychain. With embossing stamps also called punches you can emboss a pattern or writing on the leather. For this you will find a large selection of different stamps and tools in our store.
Place the key ring on a hard surface. A special stainless steel stamp block is particularly suitable for this. Place the embossing stamp in the desired position on the key ring. Stamp the motif into the leather with a short, strong stroke. Repeat this until the desired motif is finished.
Finally, you just need to attach the key ring to the keychain. Have fun with this key ring idea. Of course you can customize color, shape and text according to your ideas.
