Basic instructions for folding a paper boat for jewellery
Many people learn to fold a paper boat when they are still children so that they can play with it. But did you know that you can make the little boats to use them for jewellery? Hardly any other symbol is so strongly associated with the sea as ships and boats. And since we have our home port on the coast, you will also find the little paper ship in many categories in our shop. So why not also make jewellery with paper boats? That's exactly what we asked ourselves and put this idea into practice. This has resulted in some beautiful maritime jewellery ideas.
The basis for all these ideas is paper boat folding. Everyone has probably done it at some point, but the exact technique has been a little forgotten. As a refresher, we'll show you here exactly how to do it. All you need for the DIY paper boat is a rectangular piece of paper.
Folding with paper
Step 1: Fold the paper once in the middle and turn it so that the folded edge is on top.
Step 2: Fold the corners towards the middle.
Step 3: Now there is an edge at the bottom. Fold it upwards on both sides.
Step 4: Fold the corners of this and repeat on the other side. Now you should have a triangle in front of you.
Step 5: Press the triangle apart from the inside and fold it so that you get a square.
Step 6: Fold the square in half again to make a smaller triangle.
Step 7: Pull the triangle apart at the corners to make a boat.
You may have to press the boat a little more in one place or another. Any kind of paper is suitable for making a paper boat. Old land or sea maps look particularly good. Or design the paper for your boat yourself with a little paint to give it a very individual pattern.
Make jewellery with a folded boat
What kind of jewellery can you make with the paper boat? In our online magazine Glückswerke 13 we present five different jewellery ideas for which you have to make a sailing ship. For example, the nautical necklace with pendant paper boat in glass ball. For this beautiful necklace we used a glass ball and matching lid, ball chain with connector and Miyuki Rocailles beads. With the blue shiny beads it almost looks like the boat is sailing over the sea. For the correct assembly of the pendant, please also have a look at the basic techniques "Making a glass ball pendant" and "Attaching a connector to a ball chain".
You need the same technique for the nautical earrings and the nautical ring with paper boat. We used the paper boat in a slightly different way in the following two jewellery ideas: Maritime necklace with paper boat pendant and nail polish and the matching earrings.
We painted the finished white paper boat with glittery nail polish and let it dry before attaching it to the necklace or the earrings with an eyelet. If you prepare one of our jewellery cards by punching two holes with a hole punch, you can give the jewellery away as a gift. You can find out how big the paper needs to be to make a ship in the description for each piece of jewellery.
