Do it yourself keychain with rivets and embossed leather strap
In this DIY tutorial we show you how to make a keychain with rivets and embossed leather strap yourself very easily.
Here you can see the material and tools that you need for the keychain. Exact material lists for the keychains can be found here. You can add all items to the shopping cart with just one click!
We have used Craft leather strap for the keychain. It can be processed very well with letter stamps.
Cut a piece of the ribbon about 25 cm long and mark two points for the punch. We made the points at 9.5 and 15.5 cm.
Now punch out a hole with the hole punch at the two marked positions. We have punched the holes in the size 5 mm.
The leather is now perforated. The diameter of the holes depends, of course, on the size of the rivets you want to use. The holes must be larger than the pin of the rivet so that the rivet will fit through the leather later. But they should also not be larger than the head of the rivet, so that there is visually a good result!
In the next step, you can emboss the leather with a saying or motif. All stamps from our range are suitable for this. In addition, you need a stamp block and a hammer as a base.
First think about what you want to stamp. For text, it is recommended to lay out the letters and put them in the correct order. Often it is also helpful to write down the text in block letters on a sheet of paper and place it as a template at the workstation. For a text in vertical alignment like this keychain, I personally find it easier to stamp the text in reverse order. Then you can be sure that the text ends up where it was intended.
After you have stamped the leather, you can attach the key ring to the leather strap with a rivet. Note that a rivet consists of two parts!
It is important which side should be the front or the "nice" side later on your keychain. On the beautiful side, the part of the rivet with the pin is put through the hole in the leather.
Next, pull the key ring onto the leather strap. Put the pin of the rivet also through the second hole in the leather strap and put the head of the rivet on the pin. Both parts of the rivet are now loosely connected.
Now the rivet must be closed tightly. There is a special riveting tool for this purpose. It consists of a metal rod with a round recess on one side. Place the keychain so that the nice side with the pierced writing looks up. The riveting tool is placed so that the side with the indentation will be above the head of the rivet. Make sure that the keyring is placed on a solid surface. You can also use the punch block for this. Press the rivet together with a strong hammer blow.
The keychain is now ready. You can also decorate the keychain with additional metal tags!
You can also securely connect a keychain with screw rivets. Screw rivets are available in two different sizes. The small rivets are only suitable for connecting two leather parts, you can also use them great to decorate the leather with a metal element.
A screw rivet consists of two parts. The pin of the rivet has a screw thread. The advantage is that a screwed connection can be opened and closed again and again without any problems.
First, you can attach the decorative element to the keychain. To do this, you need to punch an additional smaller hole on one side of the leather strap below the already punched opening. Now thread the part of the screw rivet with the thread through the eyelet of the metal pendant. Put the pin also through the hole of the leather strap and screw everything on the back side with the second part of the rivet. The rivet has a slot on this part. So you can tighten rivet well with a screwdriver.
If you turn the leather strap over, you will see that the metal pendant is now firmly attached to the leather strap.
Next, pull the key ring onto the leather strap. Then connect both sides of the leather strap with the large screw rivet and tighten the rivet again with the screwdriver on the back.
The keychain with screw rivet is now ready. You can also decorate the keychain with metal tags with other motifs.
